MICHELIN Guide Saudi Arabia, Gault&Millau and Time Out Jeddah
MICHELIN restaurants in Jeddah explained: what Selected means versus a star, plus Toki’s Gault&Millau 12/20 review, Time Out listing and Google rating.

If you have been searching for MICHELIN restaurants in Jeddah, you have probably noticed that the guide recognises restaurants in more than one way, and that stars are only one of them. Toki is in the MICHELIN Guide Saudi Arabia as a Selected restaurant. It has also been scored by Gault&Millau, listed by Time Out Jeddah and reviewed by Arab News, and it holds a 4.4 rating on Google.
Here is what each source said, in its own words, with links to the originals, including the one dish a critic liked less.
Is Toki a MICHELIN star restaurant?
No. Toki is a MICHELIN Guide Selected restaurant: the inspectors recommend it, but it does not hold a star or a Bib Gourmand.
We would rather say that plainly. Selected is a genuine recommendation from the same anonymous inspectors who award the stars.
What is the difference between MICHELIN Selected and a MICHELIN star?
Stars are the guide’s highest distinction for cooking. Selected restaurants are the ones the inspectors recommend without adding a star or a Bib Gourmand, and every restaurant in the guide, starred or not, is chosen the same way.
The guide’s levels look like this:
- Three stars: exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.
- Two stars: excellent cooking, worth a detour.
- One star: high quality cooking, worth a stop.
- Bib Gourmand: good cooking at moderate prices.
- Selected: restaurants the inspectors recommend for good cooking, with no further distinction.
Inspectors visit anonymously, pay for their meals and apply the same criteria everywhere: the quality of the ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavours, the personality expressed in the cooking, and consistency across the menu and over time. So if you are looking for MICHELIN star restaurants in Jeddah specifically, filter by stars on the guide’s website. If you want places the inspectors would send you to, the Selected restaurants are part of that answer.
What does the MICHELIN Guide say about Toki?
The inspectors single out the service and the range of the menu, and they describe a lively room. Toki is listed under Chinese cuisine in the $$$ price band.
On the team and the food, the inspectors wrote: “The super attentive and very friendly team will guide through their extensive menu that features Peking and Cantonese classics alongside some dim sum.”
On the room: “The mocktail bar, soft lighting and pumping music add to the ambiance.” That bar is a good place to begin an evening, and our guide to the best mocktails in Jeddah covers what it pours.
Michelin’s page describes Toki as “a restaurant in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Jeddah”, and Toki’s own Instagram marks the recognition as “2026 MICHELIN Guide, Selected Restaurant”. Both describe the same Selected status. You can read the full MICHELIN Guide listing for Toki, and for more on how inspection works, see inside a MICHELIN Guide restaurant in Jeddah.
How does Gault&Millau score restaurants?
Gault&Millau scores restaurants out of 20, and the score is for what is on the plate. Service, setting and price are covered in the written review rather than in the number.
The guide began in France and now publishes in many countries. Its first Saudi guide, the 2025 to 2026 edition, covers nearly 250 restaurants. The scale is strict: scores climb slowly, and very few restaurants anywhere go above 17.
What did Gault&Millau say about Toki?
Gault&Millau Saudi Arabia 2026 gives Toki 12/20 in the “Gourmet Restaurant” category. The review praises the restaurant’s standing, the service dress and the crockery, and it is specific about the food.
It describes Toki as “A Chinese restaurant of good standing, rather refined, even if the platter service and dim sum also give it a family and sharing style”.
On the room: “the traditional service dress reinforces the credibility, and the crockery, with refined ceramics, contributes to the charm of the place”.
On the food: “Crispy tiger prawns of good quality, well spiced with a sweet pink vinegar sauce”.
On drinks: “Mocktails and seven varieties of tea to accompany.” The current menu lists nine teas.
The review is not all praise. Gault&Millau found the Wagyu bun less convincing than the najel. That is useful to know, and it is also the reason the score is worth trusting: a guide willing to say one dish works better than another is not simply being polite. Read the full Gault&Millau review.
Is Toki on Time Out’s list of the best restaurants in Jeddah?
Yes. Toki is featured in Time Out Jeddah’s “Best restaurants in Jeddah: 66 places you should eat at least once”, published on May 12, 2026, under Best Asian restaurants.
The list was built from the Time Out Jeddah Restaurant Awards 2026. To be precise, Toki is one of the restaurants listed in the Asian section, which is not the same as winning an award. You can read the Time Out list in full.
What did Arab News say about Toki?
On May 8, 2019, Arab News published “Ordering in with Lugmety: Jeddah’s Toki is the ultimate in Chinese comfort food”. It summed the restaurant up this way: “Although quite pricey compared to most, the quality and service have always been both consistently delicious and top-rated.”
That line is honest about price, and fair. Toki sits in the $$$ band in the MICHELIN Guide, and its own price guide is SAR 200 and up per person. The point about service, though, is the one that keeps coming back across sources written years apart. You can read the Arab News piece online.
What is Toki’s Google rating?
Toki has 4.4 stars from 2,094 Google reviews, as of November 2026.
Guides rest on a few inspection visits; Google reviews reflect thousands of ordinary ones. Together they give a fuller picture.
What do the guides agree on?
Read side by side, the sources agree on four things: the service comes first, the menu is built on Peking and Cantonese classics with dim sum, the room has real atmosphere, and the bill sits at the upper end of Jeddah dining.
